Leah Starr, Principal
I have been proudly passionate about students in Kansas City since I began teaching in Kansas City Public Schools in 2002. My love for student growth and development has grown over the 22 years I have worked in education. Before coming to Kansas City Public Schools I worked as Early Childhood Teacher and Director. I earned my undergrad degree in Early Childhood Education from Park University, a Mastered in Multidisciplinary Education from Webster University, and my Ed Specialist degree from the University of Missouri. I came to Trailwoods in 2010 as an Instructional Coach. I then became a Vice Principal and in 2017 became Principal of Trailwoods. I believe in giving opportunities and guidance to students that allows them to use their leadership skills and talents do great things for our community and the world.
Majorie Mayes, Vice Principal
My passion for Trailwoods and for the students of KCPS began in 2012 when I joined the district as a teacher. I received my BA in Fine Arts at Lake Forest College in 2007, but quickly realized my joy is teaching and helping children grow to love learning. I went on to National-Louis University to earn a MA in Elementary Education in 2012, and recently completed my EdS in Educational Leadership at UMKC in 2020. I believe my most important job is cultivating and nurturing the joy that comes from learning and creating opportunities for students to better understand themselves and their impact on the world. I have spent the last ten years in Kansas City teaching, helping teachers grow as an instructional coach, and now I am proud to help lead and serve the Trailwoods community as the Vice Principal. I am so excited to see the great things our kids do this year!
